Network Security
Network security has been the major issue for all type of networks either small or large. It is the provision to prevent misuse and unauthorized access to the computer network and other shared resources in network.
Major types of security violations are:
Data Diddling
It is the process of modifying the data prior to their entry into the computer system and network. A famous example occured several years ago when an individual modified a check deposit slip at the counter or a bank, resulting in illegal funds being deposited to the individual’s account
Salami Attack
This consists of small repetitious acts, which in themselves are unnoticeable. A well-known illustration of this security violation occurred when a programmer rounded fractions of a penny and moved the fractions to the programmer’s own account.
Piggy backing or Impersonation
It occurs when an individual breaks into a network through the use of unauthorized passwords or codes. The password is usually obtained directly from the authorized user of the network, often through inadvertence.
Networks can also be violated through what is known as a “trap door” breach. This problem involves network security software or hardware that is inadequate or has bugs (logic errors) in it, so that an individual finds the vulnarability of the system-in essence, goes through the “trap door” to gain access to the network.
